At least many recent news give reason to hope.<\/p>\n<p>Mid March, the influential Financial Times paper had a historic front page titled: \u201c<em><strong>Climate battle bears early fruit<\/strong><\/em>\u201d. The article reported on data from the International Energy Agency about <strong>the stalling of the global carbon emissions for the second year running<\/strong>, despite economic growth. How? <strong>Thanks to the accelerating deployment of solar and wind energy<\/strong>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/CO2-emissions-1.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1794\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1794\" src=\"https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/CO2-emissions-1.png\" alt=\"energy transition and CO2 emissions \" width=\"734\" height=\"443\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/CO2-emissions-1.png 734w, https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/CO2-emissions-1-300x181.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 734px) 100vw, 734px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>And indeed, <strong>renewable energy generation capacity expanded by 8.3 percent last year<\/strong>, to 1,985 gigawatts globally, the fastest annual rate on record, according to data from the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.irena.org\/News\/Description.aspx?NType=A&amp;mnu=cat&amp;PriMenuID=16&amp;CatID=84&amp;News_ID=1446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">International Renewable Energy Agency IRENA<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"http:\/\/www.irena.org\/News\/Description.aspx?NType=A&amp;mnu=cat&amp;PriMenuID=16&amp;CatID=84&amp;News_ID=1446\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1795 noopener noreferrer\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter wp-image-1795 size-full\" src=\"https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Irena-1.png\" alt=\"Renewable power generation and energy transition\" width=\"603\" height=\"432\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Irena-1.png 603w, https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Irena-1-300x215.png 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 603px) 100vw, 603px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>There are a number of factors driving this growth, in particular the falling cost of renewables technology. However, the political, environmental and social driver also play a key role.<\/p>\n<p>As a result, the UN Environment Programme revealed in its annual \u2018<a href=\"http:\/\/fs-unep-centre.org\/publications\/global-trends-renewable-energy-investment-2016\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Global Trends in Renewable Energy Investment<\/a>\u2019 report that <strong>2015 was a record year for investment in renewable energy, with $266bn invested across the globe,<\/strong> compared to $130bn invested in coal and gas power stations. <strong>2 to 1 for renewables<\/strong>, as Spanish newspaper \u201cel periodico de la energia\u201d titled <a href=\"http:\/\/elperiodicodelaenergia.com\/renovables-2-combustibles-fosiles-1-o-como-los-inversores-han-dado-la-vuelta-a-la-tortilla\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">in a recent article<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And major financial players are continuing to shift their strategy away from fossil fuels:<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><strong> The rockefeller family fund, created by the father of US oil exploration, has announced that it is \u201cdivesting\u201d<\/strong>.<\/li>\n<li><strong> The Saudi government has just launched a $2 trillion investment fund<\/strong> to wean their nation off oil within the next 20 years!<\/li>\n<li>And in the last few days, the world\u2019s biggest provider of public finance to developing countries, i.e. <strong>the world bank, said it would spend 28% of its investments directly on climate change projects<\/strong>; and that all of its future spending would take account of global warming.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>In the business sector, one can only marvel at the incredible demand Elon Musk has generated for its so called <strong>Tesla Model 3 electric vehicle, with 325000 pre-orders in less than a week, worth in excess of $14bn turnover!<\/strong> Electric vehicles are definitely a \u201cMusk-Have\u201d&#8230;<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tesla-and-Saudi-Arabia.png\" rel=\"attachment wp-att-1796\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-1796\" src=\"https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tesla-and-Saudi-Arabia.png\" alt=\"Tesla and saudia Arabia help energy transition\" width=\"954\" height=\"597\" srcset=\"https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tesla-and-Saudi-Arabia.png 954w, https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tesla-and-Saudi-Arabia-300x188.png 300w, https:\/\/d1jrzir44a083v.cloudfront.net\/blog\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/04\/Tesla-and-Saudi-Arabia-768x481.png 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 954px) 100vw, 954px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Closer to home, Congratulations to our friends from solar cooperative <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/SomEnergia\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Som Energia<\/a> who have just <a href=\"https:\/\/blog.somenergia.coop\/som-energia\/2016\/04\/som25000\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">reached 25.000 members<\/a>. Together with <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Ecooo_\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Ecoo<\/a>, through the initiative \u201c<a class=\"twitter-hashtag pretty-link js-nav\" dir=\"ltr\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/hashtag\/RecuperaelSol?src=hash\" data-query-source=\"hashtag_click\"><s>#<\/s><b>RecuperaelSol<\/b><\/a>\u201d they have raised 2 million euros in just one year to save 100s of solar farms and installations.<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>But the biggest news of all is probably that <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">70<\/span> <strong>85 pioneers have already raised <span style=\"text-decoration: line-through;\">\u20ac81.000<\/span> \u20ac102.000 (or 58% of total required) to finance the first ever <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ecrowdinvest.com\/en\/show-project\/22\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">off-grid solar installation of an Eco-touristic complex in Spain!<\/a><\/strong><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p>Granted, this is of course a tiny participation to the global movement towards clean, sustainable renewable energy.
